Stalin’s Eye Is On Ukraine

One question asked, when looking at Dekulakization and Holodomor as a whole, is why Stalin was so set on specifically collectivizing (among other things) Ukraine? One of the most blunt answers to this question would be because Ukraine was the second most successfully thriving Soviet republic at the time. Ukraine also had the best production of coal, steel and agriculture in the Soviet regime, but there was an underlying hate for the “kulaks” which many believe to be the reasoning. “…[Stalin’s plan] was to destroy the spiritual and cultural backbone of the ethnic nation, as well as to terrorize the peasantry. Without this complete annihilation of spiritual resources and cultural achievements, Stalin’s victory in the Ukraine could never be complete”(Kostiuk, 38).
